Dove Hunting Gear Checklist: What to Bring to the Field

Dove season is a favorite opener for many hunters: fast shooting, good company and usually some heat. Because you'll go through a lot of shells and spend hours sitting along a field edge, a little organization goes a long way.

1. Carry plenty of shells

Doves are fast and erratic, and it's common to go through several boxes of shells in an afternoon. Keep them within easy reach.

A mesh vest is a good choice for early-season heat because it breathes while still giving you shell pockets and a place for birds.

2. Sit comfortably

A bucket is the classic dove hunter's seat, cooler and gear box all in one. The 5-Gallon Dove Bucket Organizer with Backpack Straps turns a bucket into an organized, easy-to-carry kit, and the Camo Swivel Seat Bucket Lid makes it a comfortable seat. Prefer a stool? Try the Camo Tripod Stool or the Folding Seat.

3. Break up your outline

Doves will flare from movement and shiny skin. Light camo gloves and a breathable gaiter help without adding heat: Camo Mesh Hunting Gloves and the Mesh Neck Gaiter.

4. Set up your shotgun

Doves are migratory birds, so federal rules limit your shotgun to three shells. The Shotgun Magazine Plug is an easy fix. Bring a Choke Tube Wrench and spare chokes in Choke Tube Vials so you can adjust as the birds change, and carry your shotgun to the field in the Upland Adjustable Shotgun Slip Case.

Seasons, blaze orange rules and hunter-education requirements vary by state. Always check your state wildlife agency's current regulations before you go.

Gear up for opening day. Shop all dove hunting gear.
